| Tomorrow is concert #3 out of 3 this week. AYP concert on Sunday, which was kinda sad because it was our last concert this year. Lots of great memories...seems like it went by too quickly. Band concert was yesterday, we played probably the best we've ever played. Good job, trumpets. You finally pulled it together. AYP audition was today, it went ok. There were only about 15 oboes there (which was surprising, there are usually more) including one girl who looked like she was in 5th grade. There actually weren't that many people there at all, which could have been why they only ran about 10 minutes later (usually it's 45 minutes). Since we seemed to be on time for once, everyone started getting scared that we'd have to play minor scales, until someone said they heard the conductors weren't even asking for them any more. The audition was good, I kinda messed up on the second excerpt but nobody's perfect. English horn excerpts were a lot better. We'll see what happens. Only 23 days until I find out... If I can survive this week (meaning tomorrow), I'll practically be done for the year.

| yesterday was very long, auditioning for All-State Band and driving 100 miles back to perform in I-Night is (surprisingly) very tiring. We'd driven down to Harrisonburg the night before for All-State Band Auditions. Ah, good ol southern VA. There were a bunch of signs with some letters not lit up, so we passed places like Shone (Shoney's) and Ears (Sears). Really the only good thing was the sweet iced tea. As Rob has found out, there's no such thing as sweet iced tea in NoVA. Went to JMU, but we had to wait for Ms. Ulrey to give us our forms before we could register. She got there after everyone else was gone so we were some of the last to register. I was oboe 35 out of 37 and english horn 9 out of 9. So I waited in our warm up room from 9 until 1. 4 hours being stuck in one room can be very boring (especially when you don't have to warm up until a few minutes before you audition), but me and Dave found ways to pass the time, namely (Russian) Hangman and the Dot game with an 11 x 11 grid. Note--NEVER play the dot game with an 11 x 11 grid unless you have some serious time to kill, at least two hours. Auditions were ok, for oboe I played the scales well but the top part of the chromatic scale didn't come out, but prepared piece and sight reading were decent. English horn went better, I played both scales 2 octaves and chromatic scale was good, I messed up a bit on the prepared piece and sight reading though. Not too hopeful about getting in on either instrument, but I won't find out until they post the results online =( we waited until almost 4 for them to post the results and they still hadn't posted them by 5 (or so I was told). Then we drove back home for I-Night. Being the only white guy in guys indian dance, I knew I would stand out. But I didn't count on crashing into Arjun when we switched places (he thought I was going to his left, but I thought I was going the other way which was how we'd practiced it). If you didn't notice the first time it's on the video haha. Even funnier to watch when you're not the person getting the wind knocked out of you. I-Night was awesome, everyone has so much talent. Can't wait until next year.

| District Band was awesome. - Gladmess (a typo on the Bach chorales) - (Jewish) Wedding Dance that went so fast nobody could play it but we did anyway - Our conductor told us her entire life story, parts of which we didnt really need to hear - Mr. Hazo talked for about 15 minutes straight during the concert prompting a few people to fall asleep, but his piece (Solas Ane) was cool - The Mosquito of Cordoba
I've noticed a lot of the pieces we played sound very similar to other ones...for example Solas Ane = Lament and Tribal Dances (especially the drum part) La Mezquita de Cordoba = Armenian Dances (listen to the last part of La Mezquita when you get the CD and you'll be shocked) Wedding Dance = Yiddish Dances

| busy weekend. yesterday--it's ac districts & regionals, we won both. yay. The best answer was my Mars answer when the right answer was Shroud of Turin. Way to go me. Anyone know how Alexander the Great died? Between me, Abhi, Phil, Evan, and Michael, we guessed that he either died from AIDS, syphilis, or was shot by an alien death ray. Anyway just another random piece of information that might come up on your AP World history test in a few months. Go with the death ray, we have significant evidence for that especially on Wikipedia. today--8-12 guys dance practice, my house. it went pretty well cept that only 5 people showed up. Still we got a lot done like finishing choreographing and memorizing moves. Then, went off to a piano keyboard skills festival. I don't think I did great, but then again I hadn't practiced much cuz I dont like scales. Sight reading (for once) was good though. And it better well have been considering I was sight reading a level 3 piece and I'm playing like a level 20 for junior festival. :) So much hw...and its snowing!
